Karen Schraven, Principal

Karen Schraven is a trailblazer, a synthesizer, and a creative change artist.

Through whole systems thinking she designs more balanced, equitable and sustainable resolutions to the myriad challenges facing our societies today. Karen established True North Sustainability in 2008 to facilitate the emergence of exceptional outcomes through integrity, versatility and creativity. Her proficiencies in energy and sustainability, whole systems design, and communication generate customized strategies to the communities, groups and organizations with whom she works.

Both a scientist and an artist, practical and philosophical, Karen excels in holding seemingly opposing traits in balance. Exploring key paradoxes is essential to making communities, organizations and the world more sustainable and equitable. She draws on her experience as a musician to inspire her improvisational approach. Her ability to comprehend multiple perspectives and make innovative connections leads to expansive ideas that have direct impact.

Karen strives to inspire paradigm shift by engaging in authentic conversation and centering social and environmental justice in any discussion of sustainability and resilience.

A graduate of the University of California at Berkeley (Environmental Science), Karen holds a Master’s Degree in Whole Systems Design from Antioch University. She is a Certified Sustainable Building Advisor (CSBA).
